Three types of illumination improve a living or working or even a dining space. Ambient illumination is an overall effect that allows one to perform basic tasks and to see well enough to navigate. Task illumination is for more demanding attentive tasks, and accent illumination is used to call attention to interest pieces or to guide movement. Lighting companies produce what are called "lighting families" which fulfill all of these illuminative requirements. One member of these families is the hanging light fixtures style. They focus light on one area, but truly these do well to provide ambient and accent lighting. The little colored teardrops or upside down parabolic shapes often found in trendy pubs and gastronomies, called mini pendant light fixtures, come in a range of vibrant colors like cobalt and orange and green. Typically these are suspended from a ceiling or joist in groups of at least three; often many more than this are hung to catch the eye.

One nice approach to lighting a home or a large area like a restaurant or office is to take advantage of the "lighting family". A company like Nuvo provides a great number of families, each including hanging light fixtures with "sister" ceiling light, chandelier, and wall sconce designs to complement them. It's one way to bring repetition into a space and thus increase the visual ease. Repetition, as any landscaper can tell you, provides a sense of predictability and calm to the eye. This is why when one type of flower or tree is planted in any prime numbered grouping of eleven or more, and the more the better, the eye is drawn in and feels pleasure. Both the styles and colors of mini pendant light fixtures, once they are displayed in groups, bring a sense of calm and happiness to the viewer. You can imagine, then, the great effect you can achieve by using these repetitive groups of pendants within a larger scheme of lighting families. Enough variety combined with plenty of repeat form and color, and you have the recipe for excellent illumination.
